Amy Ichikawa

I am a Professional Certified All Breed Pet Stylist with thirty-four years experience. I studied in Chicago, Illinois and hold a NDGAA Nationwide Certificate of Achievement with a perfect score in terrier, sporting and non-sporting breeds. I have managed grooming salons in Phoenix and Scottsdale and owned a boarding kennel and pet salon on the upper peninsula of the Wisconsin/Michigan border.
I own a small ranch in North Phoenix where I live with my husband, two dogs, one cat, horses, a burro, and a flock of chickens, all being my pride and joy. My other interest is writing, and I am currently marketing my first book of Western Folk poetry. I am also at work on a novel.
I have been a part of the UVH staff for six rewarding years, and our grooming teams has worked together for many years even before choosing UVH as our workplace. Why is this important? If you love your job and are a part of a team that is dedicated to being the best, nothing will stand in your way to be just that.
Grooming requires patience, and, yes, it will be tested. There are challenges in handling young, inexperienced pets as well as from those who are les than eager to cooperate on the grooming table. I haven’t a magic wand, and there are no miracles, but I believe the tenderness in a groomer’s hands must come from a kindness in the heart – and it works like magic.

I was originally born in Connecticut, went to school in England and finished my high school years back in the U.S.
Since I was a small child, I worked with the our family pets. I trained and groomed them (not always perfectly) and learned the right skills for holding and handling from the beginning. While I was still in school it seemed the next logical step to work with animals for my first job.
I learned to groom with Dee Kazmer in Texas, a show groomer and handler, and started grooming the Bichon Frise for show. I really enjoyed learning to hand scissor, and had great opportunities to learn with some of the best. Grooming in Houston, gave me rare opportunities, like learning to groom the Dandi Dinmont and Bedlington. I had the pleasure to groom George Foreman's dogs and a Presidential pooch named Millie!
I became a grooming instructor, and traveled to teach at clinics. Back in Connecticut I held a clinic on grooming the Springer Spaniel (and got to groom the wonderful Saint Bernard- Beethoven afterwards!).
I've met some amazing furry friends in the last 24 years in my profession.
Here at University, life is serene. In a salon atmosphere I have the unique opportunity to groom at a pace which is better for the pet. I can concentrate on every one of them, and give them individual care. A dog or cat is so much easier to handle when they feel comfortable, making my life and theirs so much easier. It's not unusual here for me to see nothing but my regular clients all week! I love them!!
It's such a unique place to be, and coming up on 10 years here, I doubt I'll need to go anywhere else.

I was raised on a farm in Yellow Springs, Ohio where I leaned to love the land and everything that roams the earth. There were plenty of horses, cows, sheep, chickens and a goat living along with our many dogs and cats.
I found an interest in dog grooming while working for a veterinarian as a kennel manager. I attended the American Institute of Dog Grooming in Dayton, Ohio and am a Certified Master Dog Groomer. I opened my own grooming business in 1982 and continue my passion there until 1999 when I moved to Arizona.
I reside in the North East Valley with my family including two Boston Terriers. I enjoy the outdoors and love to camp and fish. Yes, I catch and release! I also love to listen to, and write music and a pastime.
I have been working for UVH for almost 6 years, and look forward to grooming your pets in the years to come.

Grooming Requirements
At University Grooming we have no age or breed restrictions, however we do require that all pets coming in for grooming be current on their vaccinations. Dogs must be current on their Distemper/Parvo, Rabies and Bordetella (kennel cough). Cats must be current on the Feline Distemper (upper respiratory) and Rabies. This requirement helps keep your pet, other pets and our groomers safe from common contagious diseases.
University Grooming Before and After
Our groomers have well over 60 years combined experience working with all kinds of different breeds from all over the country, but they say that pictures speak a thousand words, and this is Tiffy:
Tiffy came to us in the fall of 2009. She was found in the desert and brought in by a Good Samaritan to be patched up before finding a home. We got her checked out by the doctor, vaccinated and cleaned up. She was scared, but sweet and our gentle groomer was able to bring out the beautiful and happy dog hidden under all that hair. Tiffy was adopted immediately and is newest addition to a loving home.
Please call 480-968-9275 for an appointment or to receive a quote. Please note every pet is different and all quotes are general for the breed and service being received.
